Instances of sexual violence often increase during times of war and upheaval. Many women experienced sexual intimidation, assault, rape, or forced sex work during the years of World War II and the Holocaust. Some men also became victims of sexual violence, such as gay men imprisoned in concentration camps who were targeted by guards and kapos because of their sexuality.
