Millions of people had been uprooted from their homes by World War II and the Holocaust, which created an unprecedented refugee crisis in the immediate postwar years. The term Displaced Person (DP) was created to describe the situation of these refugees, and a network of DP camps was established to house them temporarily while preparations were made for their emigration and resettlement.
